Empowering early-stage entrepreneurs in Rochester with M&T scholarship

Since its launch on March 5, 2024, the scholarship initiative by NextCorps and M&T Bank has been instrumental in supporting early-stage entrepreneurs in Rochester. This M&T-funded program offers 15 to 20 entrepreneurs a year of free startup incubation services at NextCorps, helping them transform innovative ideas into successful businesses. The scholarship plays a crucial role in strengthening Rochester’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by removing barriers and providing essential resources and mentorship to those who might not otherwise have the means to pursue their entrepreneurial goals.

Providing Support for Common Challenges

The entrepreneurial journey can be rewarding and inspiring, but it’s often defined by challenges — even at the start. Settling on a sustainable idea alone can be daunting. “A key challenge for early-stage entrepreneurs is coming up with a viable startup idea and validating that there could be a business and customer demand for it,” said Matt Foley, Managing Director of NextCorps Incubation Services.

That’s where the M&T Scholarship comes into play. The program is designed to work with recipients at the very earliest stages of their business, ensuring that there is a market for their concept and a clear path to bringing their product to market.

The scholarship offers more than free membership in the incubator. Recipients receive mentorship and coaching from NextCorps Entrepreneurs-in-Residence on all facets of the startup journey, from market research and idea validation to fundraising and team building. They are encouraged to participate in community meetings, such as the Founders Roundtable, where they can share challenges and gain insights from their peers. Foley notes, “They have access to our 40,000-square-foot downtown incubator facility for co-working space and meetings with their teams, colleagues, investors, etc.,” which provides them with a professional environment for innovation and collaboration.

Application Process, Diversity of Ideas, and Recipient Backgrounds

The application process for the M&T Scholarship attracted a significant number of submissions, showcasing a diverse array of ideas and products. According to Foley, “the vast majority of the ideas we saw took a software-related approach to solving an industry problem.” This points to growing interest in starting a tech-oriented business within the Rochester area.

In addition to the diversity of ideas, the M&T Scholarship recipients themselves come from varied professional and personal backgrounds, enriching the program with a wide range of perspectives. The selection criteria for the scholarship emphasized early-stage entrepreneurial status, a focus on a tech-oriented solution, and a location within the Rochester area. “One of our goals with the scholarship was to provide support for individuals who are under resourced, where the usual membership fees would have been a barrier to receiving support to launch a startup,” added Foley

Impact and Call to Action

The success of the M&T Scholarship Initiative is a testament to the generous support of M&T Bank, whose commitment to fostering innovation and supporting local entrepreneurs has profoundly impacted the Rochester community. The bank has a long history of helping local business leaders build thriving companies.

“This scholarship is giving people the critical support they need during their startups’ earliest days — which can pave the way to their success,” said Dan Burns, M&T Bank Regional President. “The M&T Scholarship initiative has made a significant difference for emerging entrepreneurs by providing mentorship and resources that help them overcome barriers and transform their ideas into successful ventures.”

Looking ahead, Foley emphasizes, “It’s only through supporting as many regional startup founders as possible that we can hope to build a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in this region for the years to come.”
