From Observer to Participant: Quain’s Journey with NextCorps

Jeffrey Quain is a seasoned expert in economic development, government relations, and policy, with more than a decade of experience across Upstate New York and beyond. Currently, as a Senior Economic Development Specialist at NYSEG/RG&E, he supports businesses looking to establish or expand in Upstate New York.

Quain’s introduction to NextCorps began during his tenure at NYSEG/RG&E, where he encountered the NextCorps’ Manufacturing Accelerator Grant, which led him to “learn more about the multifaceted approaches NextCorps uses to help businesses grow in our region,” he recalled. “Learning about success stories and finding ways to contribute feels natural and deeply fulfilling,” Quain shared. This led to his involvement with NextCorps.

Inspiration from Rochester’s Economic Development

Quain has a profound appreciation for the region’s diverse landscape and professional ethos, which was developed from living in Buffalo and having a career entrenched in Upstate New York. He finds inspiration in the “coordination and camaraderie among organizations in the Finger Lakes and Rochester region,” noting a shared goal to build and support efforts. He views economic development as a “holistic approach that stems from supporting start-ups, entrepreneurs, and the services that uplift them both, much like what NextCorps does.”

Originally from Binghamton, NY, Quain acknowledges the decline in manufacturing that has impacted the Southern Tier, but he finds Rochester’s vibrant downtown exudes an infectious energy that resonates with him, particularly in its “support for up-and-coming entrepreneurs.” For Quain, Rochester represents a thrilling landscape of opportunity and growth.

Vision for Rochester’s Future

Looking to the future, Quain foresees significant transformations for Rochester. He emphasized the broader commitment to equity and community integration symbolized by projects like the removal of the Inner Loop in Rochester. “This initiative goes beyond mere infrastructure – it signifies a broader commitment to equity and community integration, rendering Rochester an even more desirable locale, and exemplifies the positive change unfolding here.”

Quain is optimistic about the momentum driving these changes and anticipates that they will foster greater community cohesion and present promising prospects. Initiatives like the Rochester-Syracuse-Buffalo Tech Hub Designation are expected to attract start-ups to Rochester. Redirecting resources towards smaller manufacturing companies can lay a robust foundation for future entrepreneurs. Quain underscored the intertwined evolution of Rochester with the “success of its entrepreneurial ventures, exemplified by the growing number of success stories emerging from programs at NextCorps.”

Finding Joy Beyond Work

Beyond his professional passions, Quain and his wife, Deirdre, are proud pet parents to two energetic huskies, Argus and Kai. Quain enjoys exploring Upstate New York’s natural splendor, from the picturesque Finger Lakes to the rugged beauty of the Adirondacks. “It’s amazing to me how much natural beauty and local charm are right in our backyard,” he mused, “including the vibrant local shops and breweries that I love to support.”

Quain enjoys reading, particularly history books. “Learning something new is a constant source of joy for me, whether it’s through books or trying my hand at new skills, like cooking, which has recently become a passion of mine.”

Quain also enjoys relaxing with a good movie or TV show, but above all, he values the pursuit of knowledge and the opportunity to expand his horizons. “New York, with its rich history and diverse offerings, provides endless opportunities for discovery and growth, making it the perfect place for me to call home.”
